Manhasset SEPTA and Dello Nutritionals Event May 18th
Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) hosted a cooking workshop recently that focused on supporting the special dietary needs of families with food allergies and special nutritional needs. The event, which had nearly 40 attendees, highlighted family-friendly dishes that were diary, wheat, egg and nut free. Furthermore, the workshop spotlighted the importance of better food choices and how these choices support the special nutritional needs of children with developmental, learning and physical disabilities.
The workshop was conducted by Maria Dello of Dello Nutritionals who is a certified nutritionist. Along with her staff, Dello provided a lecture, cooking demonstration and food tasting that lasted two hours.
The workshop and cooking demonstration provided appetizers, entrees and dessert options using organic and nutritional ingredients. A full list and the recipes can be found on the Manhasset SEPTA website under the “Keeping Our Families Healthy” page. Kid food such as turkey sliders, chia pudding, smoothies and mock lunchables were also part of the demo and food tasting.
Attendees found the information about understanding package labels and nutritional tables most helpful. Knowing the different names for additives, sweeteners and allergens, as well as understanding sugar, fat and protein listings had most parents coming away from the workshop better informed for healthier food choices at the market. Many parents were also shocked by deceptive food packaging labels as “healthy,” “low calorie” and “light” when the nutritional labels showed high fat and sugar contents that were at unhealthy levels.
“Manhasset SEPTA is so grateful to Maria for bringing this educational and tasty presentation to our special needs community,” SEPTA Co-President Ann Marie Moschitta stated. Moschitta, who hosted the workshop in her home, added, “What a great motivator to avoid junk food, use caution, and make smarter healthy choices that directly impact our families.
.”
There was also fundraising raffles for ten prizes during the workshop. Prizes included a nuBest , dinner for four to Café Continental, and specialty items from Whole Foods Market, Matty’toy shop,Stressa, Billy Dee’s, Wellness beef, Wild Pacific Salmon,Mountain Valley water, and more.

With Kids in the Kitchen
Long Island Students and Families Learn Healthy Lifestyle Habits at Westbury Event
Roslyn, N.Y. – March 15, 2010, The Junior League of Long Island (www.jlli.org), a nonprofit organization of women volunteers, joined the battle to end childhood obesity on Long Island with Kids in the Kitchen, an educational and fitness-themed event, on Saturday, March 13, 2010. One hundred students at Powells Lane Elementary School in Westbury and their families were given tools and tips to learn how to live a healthy, affordable, active lifestyle.
The Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen event addressed the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity on Long Island through interactive, hands-on activities and demonstrations from local nutrition and fitness experts. Incorporating an Olympic theme with opening and closing ceremonies, the kindergarten through sixth grade students of Powells Lane Elementary School enjoyed entertaining instructional sessions by Lucie B’s Jump N’ Fun, Breakthroughs to Fitness, Lilchefs.com, Dr. Michelle from Kids Smiles Dentistry Group, Nutritionist Maria Dello, C.N., and Lizzy Rockwell, author of Good Enough to Eat.
“The Junior League has always been about improving the lives of children and our Kids in the Kitchen initiative empowers Long Island children to adopt healthy habits. Educating children is the key to reducing the obesity trend in our nation and its associated health issues such as diabetes and heart disease,” said Deidra Maleno, President of The Junior League of Long Island. “Our wonderful provisional class of new Junior League volunteers worked incredibly hard to make this event such a phenomenal success. Kids in the Kitchen would also not have been possible without the generous donations of time, talents and products from our many local sponsors.”

Dello Nutrition and SEPTA Partner to Support Optimal Health
Fundraiser Brings Awareness to Plastic Bottle Health Hazards
Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) and local nutritional expert Maria Dello announce a partnership to support optimal health for parents and children in the community. The first phase of the collaboration is a public outreach to build awareness of the hazards from plastic drinking bottles. As part of this awareness, Dello Certified Nutritionals is donating 25% of all sales from their stainless steel drinking bottles to Manhasset SEPTA.
“It is imperative that the public knows about the hazards that plastic drinking bottles pose, especially to special needs children who may already have a lower threshold to chemical absorption,” certified nutritionist Maria Dello states. “With so many negative effects of plastic bottles that are particularly dangerous to growing children, it is key that parents understand and prevent added assaults to their children with learning and developmental disabilities,” she added.
The greatest health hazard of plastic drinking bottles is the chemicals leached into the water or liquid that in turn gets ingested when drinking the bottle’s contents. Furthermore, plastic bottles that get warmed during the day as they sit in a car or in a lunch bag have added health threats as the bacteria inside grows. According to a newsletter from John Hopkins, freezing bottles of water also increases dioxins that get released in the liquid, producing dioxin carcinogens that have been linked to cancer. There are also finding that the chemicals found in plastic water bottles can disrupt the endocrine system leading to hormone imbalances that could result in weight gain and fatigue.
“It is ironic that most people try to improve their health when they drink more water, yet they might actually be jeopardizing their health when using plastic bottled water,” Ms. Dello noted. “Simply using stainless steel bottles filled with home filtered water is an easy and cost effective way to prevent these hazards, and at the same time helping the environment by reducing waste,” she added.
Dello Certified Nutritionals’ fundraiser is taking place now until January 2010. All purchases will contribute a 25% donation to Manhasset SEPTA. An Invitation To Health
On November 15, I had the pleasure being a guest at Canyon Ranch in Miami. While visiting Canyon Ranch, I attended multiple health lectures which are given through out the day. Each lecture varied with health in mind, such as “the importance of exercise”, “switching over to eating organic foods” as well as learning what foods to eat during cold and flu season. Each lecture brought valuable tools to integrate in one’s daily routine. The resort also offers an array of classes daily starting at seven Am, ending at seven PM, from Yoga, rock climbing, cardio kickboxing, meditation, weight room circuit training, Qi-Gong, Core training, and many more.
I was fortunate to take several classes my favorite being the Yoga classes as well as a stretch class, they both reminded me how important it is to “breathe”, this allows the body to oxygenate. Along with it’s state of the art gym, the resort also offers certain therapeutic treatments located in their spa area, these treatments ranged from stone massage and reflexology. This treatment is known to hit trigger points located on your feet which help assist the body in well being and detoxification. The resort is beautifully facing the ocean which fosters and experience of serenity while inhaling the ocean breeze. There is something relaxing and invigorating being on the water, it also has various pools surrounding the property.
The resort is known for there “Aquavina” section located in the spa area, this area consists of a sauna, steam room and a whirl pool, and an “igloo” section, this principle is to aid in sweating and detoxification. This process of detoxification has been around for centuries, thus helps to relax aching muscles and bring circulation to joints. Along with it’s beautiful setting and detoxifying program they also offer healthy spa cuisine, each dish is perfectly caloric ally counted to modify your daily intake of food. I had the pleasure of spending time with the executive chef and discussed the spa cuisine that is offered at the ranch, the menu offers various dishes from wild caught fish to grass fed beef and many delicious salads. One of my favorite dishes was a fish dish on top of puréed roasted vegetables topped with cilantro.
The chef also offered tasty breads were made on the premises, I sampled one right out of the oven, made with walnuts and cranberry’s, it was quit scrumptious . Each dish was tasty and calculated with fats-proteins and carbohydrates. The chef was more then happy to share recipes while giving me a grand tour of the kitchen.
My invitation at the Ranch was a dream getaway, it was educational and was a mindful way to keep our body, mind and spirit in harmony. We all often keep busy stressful lives, this was a reminder how important it is to keep balance in our lives. I always say “this isn’t a dress rehearsal- we only get one chance to keep our health intact” In addition, the people at the ranch were courteous and accommodating. It was the perfect way to integrate good health into our daily lives, thus I and will be sharing the tools that I have learned into my practice.

2nd Annual “Kids 'n Nutrition" Candy Drive
November 1, 2009
On Sunday, November 1, 2009 Certified Medical Nutritionist, Maria Dello of Manhasset, hosted the second annual “Kids n Nutrition” Candy Drive. Kids from all over Manhasset and the surrounding areas donated a total of 200 lbs of Halloween candy in exchange for gifts that included; stainless steel water bottles, stuffed animals, jump ropes, frizz bees, bouncy balls, card games and more. The moms who brought them were all too happy not to have all that candy at home tempting them! Usually following Halloween kid’s and families eat too much candy.
It was a fun and successful day. Families strolled in bringing bags of candy in exchange for toys and healthy treats, the kids had big smiles on their faces and were happy to give up their sweets. Ms. Dello makes great efforts to keep our families healthy and educate about diabetes. Ms. Dello also gave out pedometers and collected donations for JDRF (Juvenal Diabetes Research Foundation) to encourage people to be more active. The Pedometers are a way to “Step into you’re new health plan” Ms. Dello stats “people at high risk of diabetes cut their risk in half by combining consist exercise like walking combined with a healthy diet”
It is Maria Dello’s pleasure to provide this service for the enrichment and health of tomorrow’s future. A special thanks to Matty’s Toy Stop, Manhasset Sporting Goods and Whole Food Market for their generous donations. All the hard candy will be donated to our troops overseas and the chocolate will be donated to the Kings Point Academy.

“FOOD
FOR THOUGHT”
SUR LA
TABLE

“PREVENTION IS THE CURE”
Thank you all for joining us Monday evening at the
“Food For Thought” event sponsored by the MWCABC, I ‘m pleased that you found
it to be enjoyable and informative. I would like to reiterate in detail some
of the health tips that I mentioned then.
MY TOP TEN PREVENTION TIPS
- Maintain a proper weight. There is a
correlation between a cascade of illness and obesity. Specifically,
abdominal obesity. A waist line larger than 35 inches in
circumference in women increases the possibility of known diseases such as
heart disease/diabetes and some cancers. Studies
have shown a higher body fat results in higher estrogen levels.
- Hydration: Dehydration is the main cause of
fatigue and muscle soreness. It is vital to drink pure filtered water. I
recommend Fiji, Penta and a reverse osmosis filtration whole house system. Refer to website for all details and preferred companies.
- Food Source - When possible buy organic and
support your local farmers.
- PH Level - Alkalinity vs. acidity – The body
struggles to maintain the perfect alkalinity level of 7.4. The body
flourishes on an alkaline environment. Disease thrives in a high acid
environment. Good alkaline foods are GREENS – Number 1 producing acid food is SUGAR. Cancer feeds on sugar.
- Vitamin D – The sunshine vitamin. The best
source Cod Liver Oil. 70% of all Americans are Vitamin D deficient. Low
levels of Vitamin D are related to Cancer, Diabetes, Heart Disease,
Arthritis, Fatigue, Depression and Season Affective Disorder, Obesity,
Syndrome X and others.
The major biologic function of
Vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain
strong bones. It promotes bone mineralization in concert with a number of
other vitamins, minerals and hormones.
- High Triglycerides - Can occur as a result of
consuming too many carbohydrates, Specially pastas, sweets, breads- Foods
that spike blood sugar level above 81, causes an insulin response. (Myth: cooking pasta “Al Dente” reduces
Glycimic index) >A starch is a starch. 75% of women with breast cancer have high Triglycerides.
Studies have shown a higher body fat results in higher estrogen levels. An
occasional sweet treat or pasta is fine. Balance is the key!!
- Folic Acid - Appropriate levels of folic acid greatly
reduces mortality rates among men and women excluding those who consume
alcohol because the consumption of alcohol depletes folic acid. I highly
suggest Folic acid.
- GOOD FATS – Good fats include: Olive Oil,
Coconut Oil, Palm Oil and Fish Oils. AVOID Franken fats. (Hydrogenated,
partially hydrogenated trans fats, margarines, Benachol and butter
substitutes. These fats are like plastics and have endless shelf life.
Remember foods with a shorter life give us a longer life!
- Antioxidants - Instrumental to longevity and
the mopping up of free radical damage. To increase your antioxidants
consume a more colorful variety of fruits and vegetables. Include red,
orange, purple, green and yellow, which contain lycopene, carotene and the
highest of all antioxidants the blueberry. Blueberries contain anthocyamins,
a powerful antioxidant.
- Soy – All soy and soy products are chlorinated,
hydrogenated. Soy depresses immune and thyroid functions. It binds thyroid
hormones and medications, In addition raises
Estrogen levels, not conducive for breast health.
AVOID ALL SOY PRODUCTS!!!
My 5 Favorites
- Green Tea- by Herbsway
- Vital Choice- Wild Salmon -
- Yoga Relaxation tape- from Gaiam
- Blackwing Meats – Organic and Grass Fed Meats
- Ortho Molecular Ultimate Pak – The Mercedes of
Vitamins
Bonus Booster – Ortho
Molecular Greens Drink – comes in convenient 24 pak.

Last but not least, I would like to offer to any and all
a free BMI – (Body Mass Index) and BMR –

DELLO NUTRITIONALS “Kids n
Nutrition” Project
Collects 175lbs of Candy!

WINNER OF "KID'S N NUTRITION" Project Christen Arella and 8 year
old son Brian, of Strathmore, collected dinner and gift certificates from
DelloNutritionals, Matty's Toy Shop and Whole Foods.

In an dual effort to promote healthy eating habits while
helping children part with extra Halloween candy, Dellonutritionals of Manhasset
collected 175 lbs of candy from the community in their first annual “Kids n
Nutrition” project. The first annual event was held on Sat, Nov. 1, and the
“Kids n Nutrition” project swapped Halloween candy from children in exchange
for gifts from some of Manhasset’s local businesses, including Matty’s Toy Shop,
Manhasset Sporting Goods, Whole Foods Market, Sage Fine Foods, and
Dellonutritionals. Moms also received a ‘treat’ for their extra candy—a free
pass to Manhasset’s new yoga studio, Lotus Rising.
Furthermore, there was a raffle with a grand prize.
Christine Arella and her eight year old son Brian of Strathmore Vanderbilt was
the winner of the raffle drawing which included services and products from
Dellonutritionals, a family dinner from Sage Fine foods and gift certificates
from Whole Foods Market.
Certified medical nutritionist and founder of
Dellonutritionals Maria Dello created this project to help families make
healthier choices in their diet and daily lifestyle. Ms. Dello stated, “I wanted
to make it a fun, positive experience for the children to part with their
candy.” She continued, “With the increase in childhood obesity—with sugar the
major contributor to that obesity—it is key that we set a good example for our
children.”
Ms. Dello noted that healthy choices start with an awareness
of our diet so she asked each child if candy is a healthy or unhealthy treat.
All the children unanimously stated with conviction that it was unhealthy. Ms.
Dello then discussed healthy treats and activities that children can choose to
do everyday, including adding vegetables and fruits to their diets and including
active play several times each day. With jump ropes, games and toys to swap for
their Halloween candy, all the children gladly participated in the project.
Parents too were happy to be part of such a health-conscious
event, expressing gratitude for the project. One mom stated, “What a huge relief
because now I don’t have to worry that my son will be eating this candy every
day for the next few weeks!” Many parents also confessed that the project and
candy exchange helped them make better choices after the holiday.
Ms. Dello said it was an honor to organize and run this
program. “I have a great sense of peace knowing that we do have control over
this aspect of our health. I am dedicated to educating families and promoting
good health and nutrition in our community.” Ms. Dello looks forward to making
the “Kids n Nutrition” project an annual post-Halloween event.
Ms. Dello gives special thanks to all the local merchants who
participated in the project, noting how they were instrumental in making it such
a well received event. With 175 lbs. of candy collected, the project was indeed
a huge success. All the candy collected will be donated to the Kings Point
Academy.

This year, the League was honored to have Maria Dello, CN speak at all three of
their meetings which were attended by over 55 members. Ms. Dello, a Certified
Nutritionist from Dello Certified Nutritionals, Inc. in Manhasset, spoke about
making healthy choices in 2008. Maria Dello is also the newest member of the
Community Advisory Board of the Junior League of Long Island and will be a
consultant for Junior League's upcoming project, Kids in the Kitchen, which
teaches pre-school children the importance of eating healthy and making good
choices. The presentations each began with a questionnaire about current eating
habits. Once member had finished the survey, the group as a whole was polled as
to which category they fell into – did they already have good habits, were they
on their way to healthy habits, or did they need help cleaning up their habits?
Ms. Dello shared some tips on how to have healthier lives. Her first
recommendation was to omit three things from our diets, specifically trans fats,
sugar and chemicals. She encouraged everyone to read labels, to avoid anything
partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated in order to avoid trans fats, to limit
sugar intake especially high fructose corn syrup and any chemical sweeteners
such as aspartame or saccharine (she does recommend using Stevia as a sweetener
instead of sugar since it does not raise blood sugar). Maria brought a special
scale that measured our body fat percentage, some of the women were surprised to
see there measurements. Other recommendations included keeping a food journal so
that you can be aware of what you are eating and making sure to exercise for 45
minutes at least three days a week, Also, she recommended that you do not
attempt a detox without professional supervision due to the feelings that can
accompany the detox. She also stressed the great importance of drinking at least
eight glasses of water a day (not during mealtimes). Maria also touched upon
diabetes and heart disease, she also shared healthful recipes with our group.

VISITS PLANDOME
WOMAN'S CLUB (MANHASSET PRESS JUNE O8)

Members of the Plandome Woman's Club received nutritional advice from Maria
Dello, CN. Throughout and after the presentation Maria was inundated
with questions. From left to right: Liz Miller, Mia Steele from Garden City (a
member of the Junior League of Long Island and assisting Maria Dello), Alice
King, Terry Scott, Judy Carroll, Maria Dello, CN, and Lucille Gaffney.
You know you should read the labels on the food you purchase. But do you really
know how to read and interpret them?
Your mother or grandmother gave her children a daily dose of cod liver oil. Do
you continue to do this for your children?
Your mother always told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the
day? Do you - or your children - leave home without eating?
Members and guests at the Plandome Woman's Club recently learned about these
points and much more from Maria Dello, a nutritionist based on Plandome Road in
Manhasset.
Among a wide range of topics, Ms. Dello told all about fat production in our
bodies, artificial colors in food, additives in foods and vitamin tablets, and
how sugar substitutes, diet drinks and other foods really affect our bodies.
Explaining how carefully selected foods improve our overall health, Ms. Dello
advised us to buy good quality foods (organic if possible).
Included in her advice were the following: eat breakfast - preferably one high
in protein, eat grain breads and foods, avoid processed foods, carefully read
food labels, avoid foods with added food coloring, take - and administer to your
children - a daily dose of cod liver oil (flavored ones are available), eat fish
a few times a week but avoid those with high levels of mercury, eat vegetables
and fruit of every color to get more anti-oxidants, eat berries every day (be
sure to wash them first), choose your multi-vitamin tablet very
carefully, switch to parchment paper in your kitchen instead of aluminum foil --
yes, it leeches into your food. For motivation in that direction, one of
several delicious recipes shared with the group was for wild salmon, baked in
parchment paper.
Walk regularly to improve the cardiovascular system and raise metabolism. For
weight loss, it is a good idea to write down everything you eat as it helps you
keep on track.
As always, be sure to check with your doctor or nutritionist or
pharmacist before adding vitamins and supplements to your diet.
Try to slow down a little in your busy life and avoid stress. Have fun too -
laughter really is important in your well-being. And again, your mother really
does know best: get plenty of sleep every night!
